WHEREAS, Ordinance 6PSF-E, adopted on May 20, 2015, authorizes the designation of an intersection, etc. for honorary and ceremonial purposes; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Mattie M. Booker was a longtime community activist in Newark's Central Ward where she advocated for affordable housing for low and moderate income families; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Booker was very instrumental in the conversion of the High Park Terrace Apartments into one of Newark's most successful Cooperative Housing Complexes, in addition to serving as the first and only President of its Board of Directors for thirty-four (34) years; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Booker received numerous awards and commendations from the City of Newark for her many years of dedication and commitment to Newark's youth and their well-being, including serving as PTA President of Eighteenth Avenue School; Founder, Leader and Den Mother of the Felix Fuld Housing Projects Troop and Central Ward District Leader.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:
1. The Municipal Council does hereby authorize the honorary and ceremonial renaming of the intersection Quitman Street and Muhammad Ali Avenue as Mattie M. Booker Way.
2. The official name of the said streets shall remain Quitman Street and Muhammad Ali Avenue in its entirety.
