WHEREAS, Ordinance 6PSF-f, adopted on May 20, 2015, authorizes the designation of an intersection, etc. for honorary and ceremonial purposes; and

WHEREAS, for many years First Corinthian Missionary Baptist Church has been the bedrock and cornerstone of the 18th Avenue/South 10th Street/Springfield Avenue community, where it has not only provided spiritual sustenance and nourishment, but the other essentials needed to improve the quality of life of its underserved residents including food, clothing and shelter; and

WHEREAS, under the visionary leadership, hard work and sturdy stewardship of the late Reverend Dr. Willie A. Simmons and Reverend Dr. Samuel Austin, First Corinthian Missionary Baptist Church spearheaded affordable housing, new commercial development along the Springfield Avenue corridor and increased job growth, contributing greatly to the stabilization and revitalization of the community and changing the lives of many Newark residents; and

WHEREAS, through the unyielding and unwavering contributions of civic giants such as Reverend Dr. Willie A. Simmons and Reverend Samuel Austin, two (2) men of notable individual accomplishments and accolades within their own right, the City of Newark's re-emergence as a leading urban city is a testament to their lifetime of achievement and unselfish service.
