WHEREAS, Ordinance 6PSF-e, adopted on May 20, 2015, authorizes the designation of an intersection, etc. for honorary and ceremonial purpose; and
WHEREAS, Gail Muhammad, a lifelong Newark resident and valued labor leader, began her poignant career in union organizing and workers’ rights issues after becoming employed by the Newark Public Schools as a Food Service Worker from 1984 until her retirement in 2015, where she eventually became President of Local 3/SEIU for Workers United; and
WHEREAS, her lengthy list of accomplishments and civic activism, included serving on Mayor Ras Baraka’s Commission on the Status of Women, serving as a Fair Housing Officer on the City of Newark’s Housing Committee, serving as Vice-President of the Board of Directors of High Park Garden Terrace and serving as President of the Essex County Democrats for Women.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:
1. The Municipal Council does hereby authorize the honorary and ceremonial renaming of the intersection of Prince Street and Court Street as Gail Muhammad Way.
2. The official names of the said streets shall remain the same in their entirety.

This resolution authorizes the naming of the intersection of Prince Street and Court Street as Gail Muhammad Way, for honorary and ceremonial purposes.
