WHEREAS, Ordinance 6PSF-f, adopted on May 20, 2015, authorizes the designation of an intersection, etc., for honorary and ceremonial purposes; and

WHEREAS, Ann Byrd was born and affectionately known as Lady Byrd or Mama Byrd. Ms. Byrd was educated in the Newark Public School system and after graduation she became a longtime, loyal employee of Newark Public Schools (NPS); and

WHEREAS, after serving twenty-five (25) years with Newark Public Schools, Ms. Byrd retired and became a volunteer every summer at the Bo Porter Recreation Center on Lyons Avenue in the South Ward. Ms. Byrd was noted for her Summer Back-to-School Cookout for all the neighborhood children where book bags and supplies were given to them for the upcoming school year; and

WHEREAS, Ms. Byrd was a longtime active member of the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in Newark, she also spent many hours on her porch with people in the neighborhood, young and old to encourage and engage them in positive conversations in order to keep them on the straight roads of life.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:

1. The Municipal Council hereby authorizes the honorary and ceremonial renaming of the intersection of Mapes Terrace and Schuyler Avenue as "Ann Byrd Way".

2. The official name of the said streets shall remain Mapes Terrace and Schuyler Avenue in their entirety.
