WHEREAS, on January 24, 2024, there was a fatal shooting on the 100th block of Irvine Turner Boulevard, which has created vast safety concerns throughout the community; and
WHEREAS, there is a need to deflate criminal activity and unsafe pedestrian conditions at the intersection of Irvine Turner Boulevard and 18th Avenue (Central Ward); and
WHEREAS, the Municipal Council seeks to request that the New Jersey Transit Bus Operation have the bus shelter at 162-164 Irvine Turner Boulevard relocated south to the corner of 170 Irvine Turner Boulevard.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, STATE OF NEW JERSEY, THAT:
1. The Municipal Council urges New Jersey Transit to relocate the bus stop at 162-164 Irvine Turner Boulevard south to the corner of 170 Irvine Turner Boulevard to deflate criminal activity and unsafe pedestrian conditions.
2. A copy of this Resolution shall be forwarded to New Jersey Transit Bus Operations, the Business Administrator and the Acting Director of the Department of Engineering.
