WHEREAS, Ordinance 6PSF-E, adopted on May 20, 2015, authorizes the designation of an intersection, etc. for honorary and ceremonial purposes; and
WHEREAS, the residents of Portuguese descent have made tremendous contributions to the success of the City of Newark’s cultural, economic and social progress; and
WHEREAS, one of the most prominent and influential members of the Portuguese community was Mr. Bernadino Coutinho, business owner, founder/creator of Newark’s Annual Portuguese Day Parade and Festival, the largest in the State of New Jersey and one of the largest in the United States, celebrating Portuguese history, culture and foods.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:
1. The Municipal Council does hereby authorize the honorary and ceremonial renaming of the south corner of Ferry Street and Madison Street, Bernardino Coutinho Plaza.
2. The name of the said streets shall remain Ferry Street and Madison Street in its entirety.
STATEMENT
This resolution hereby authorizes the naming the south corner of Ferry Street and Madison Street as Bernadino Coutinho Plaza, for honorary and ceremonial purposes.
