WHEREAS, on April 16, 2016, an earthquake of large proportions devastated several areas of Ecuador; and
WHEREAS, it might be too dangerous for a safe return home for many Ecuadorians residing in the United States; and
WHEREAS, Temporary Protected Status (T.P.S.) is an immigration benefit granted to nationals of foreign countries that have experienced a disaster or conflict that makes it too dangerous for a safe return home; and
WHEREAS, Temporary Protected Status allows Ecuadorians to help support the recovery effort through their remittances and T.P.S. delays deportations until the country is stable enough to accept returning nationals.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:
1. The Newark Municipal Council supports Temporary Protection (T.P.S.) for the Ecuadorian community in the United States based on humanitarian grounds.
2. A copy of this resolution shall be forwarded to the United States Department of State by the Office of the City Clerk.
STATEMENT:
This resolution hereby declares Municipal Council support of Temporary Protected Status (T.P.S.) for the Ecuadorian community residing in the United States during the aftermath of the earthquake in Ecuador till the country is stable enough to accept returning nationals.
