WHEREAS, Ordinance 6PSF-f, adopted on May 20, 2015, authorizes the designation of an intersection, etc., for honorary and ceremonial purposes; and

WHEREAS, State Senator Ronald L. Rice (D-Newark, 28th Legislative District) is the longest-serving African-American legislator in New Jersey and has made his mark as an advocate for social justice and civil rights and was elected to the State Senate in a 1986 Special Election following the death of John P. Caufield. He was sworn in and took office on December 4, 1986 and elected to a full term in 1987, and has been re-elected nine (9) times; and

WHEREAS, Senator Rice has sponsored legislation in the areas of criminal justice, healthcare, affordable housing, tenant rights, employee rights and education. He has been a Democratic County Committee member since 1976. He won the West Ward seat on the Newark Municipal Council in 1982, and was re-elected in 1986, 1990, and 1994. In July 2002, he was appointed Deputy Mayor of Newark; and

WHEREAS, Senator Rice is a veteran of the Vietnam War where he served in 1968 and 1969, and was the holder of Presidential and Navy Unit Citations. He was in the Marine Corps from 1966 to 1970, and was honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:

1. The Municipal Council hereby authorizes the honorary and ceremonial renaming of the intersection of Mars...
