WHEREAS, on January 20, 2021, President Joseph Biden sent to the United States Congress the United States Citizenship Act of 2021 (the “Act”), to restore humanity and American values to the United States Immigration system; and
WHEREAS, the United States Citizenship Act proposes to provide pathways and an earned roadmap to citizenship for undocumented individuals, to keep families together, to embrace diversity, to promote immigrant and refugee integration and citizenship, to grow the United States economy, and to protect workers from immigration related workplace retaliation; and
WHEREAS, the Act proposes to address the root cause of migration by increasing assistance and aid to El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras, and by providing safe and legal channels for vulnerable populations to seek protections and asylum seekers.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:
1. The Municipal Council on behalf of the City of Newark is in support of the United States Citizenship Act of 2021.
2. The Office of the City Clerk shall forward a certified copy of this resolution to New Jersey’s United States Senate representatives, Senator Robert Menendez and Senator Cory Booker, its Congressional delegation, in addition to, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy and the New Jersey State Legislature.
