WHEREAS, the late Donald M. Payne was a legendary community activist and an elected official in the City of Newark, New Jersey; and
WHEREAS, Newark residents were very fond of this consummate public servant; and
WHEREAS, the late Donald M. Payne leaves behind a host of historical achievements in both his public and private lifestyles; and
WHEREAS, the governing body is seeking to maintain his legacy with the many residents of this City by designating signage within the City of Newark, honoring the many successful years of his unselfish contributions, by naming Mulberry Street and Walnut Street "Donald M. Payne Square" for honorary and \ceremonial purposes.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:
1. The corner of Mulberry Street and Walnut Street is herein designated as "Donald M. Payne Square" for honorary and ceremonial purposes.
2. The official name of said streets shall remain as Mulberry Street and Walnut Street in their entirety.
