WHEREAS, Ordinance 6PSF-f adopted on May 20, 2015, authorizes the designation of an intersection, etc. for honorary and ceremonial purposes; and

 

WHEREAS, Amiri and Amina Baraka, arguably New Jersey’s leading proponents and advocates of Black creative arts and cultural expressions that reflected the rich and diverse experience of African-American in America; and

 

WHEREAS, Amiri and Amina Baraka, who prided themselves on being a forceful advocate of Black Cultural Nationalism, in the vanguard of the revolutionary Black Arts Movement of the 1960’s and 1970’s,

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:

                     

1.                     The Municipal Council does hereby authorize the honorary and ceremonial renaming of the intersections of Clinton Avenue and South 10th Street and Madison Avenue and South 10th Street as “Amiri & Amina Baraka Way”.

 

2.                     The official name of the said streets shall remain Clinton Avenue, South 10th Street  and Madison Avenue, in their entirety.

 

 

STATEMENT

 

This Resolution authorizes the naming of the intersections of Clinton Avenue and South 10th Street and Madison Avenue and South 10th Street as “Amiri & Amina Baraka Way”, for honorary and ceremonial purposes.
