WHEREAS, the City of Newark has a diverse population, including many residents of Puerto Rican heritage; and
WHEREAS, the current economic debt crisis affecting Puerto Rico is a serious problem that impacts the health and welfare of its residents, many of whom are relatives of City of Newark residents; and
WHEREAS, it is incumbent upon the United States Government to assist our fellow citizens by enacting or taking all necessary measures to assist Puerto Rico with its current economic conditions for the benefit of all people; and
WHEREAS, all municipal and government organizations and advocacy groups should work together toward the common goal of lending support and finding lasting solutions to the economic debt crisis.
NOW, BE IT RESOLVED, BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:
1. The Municipal Council of the City of Newark urges the United States Government and all state and municipal government organizations and advocacy groups to work together toward finding a solution to and rendering all necessary aid to the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico with regard to the current economic debt crisis.
2. Certified copies of this resolution shall be forwarded to the United States, Secretary of the Treasury, the New Jersey League of Municipalities, the National League of Cities, the United States Conference of Mayors, and the Essex County State and Federal delegations and to the Governor of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.
