WHEREAS, Donald J. Trump, a candidate for the Office of President of the United States, issued a statement on December 7, 2015, entitled Donald J. Trump Statement on Preventing Muslim Immigration”, calling for a “shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country’s representatives can figure out what is going on,” following recent events involving domestic terrorism; and
WHEREAS, the Municipal Council finds such a position abhorrent no matter what race or religion would be the subject of such a ban; and
WHEREAS, the Municipal Council urges likeminded people to denounce the positions advocated by Donald J. Trump with regard to Muslims.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:
1. The Governing Body hereby denounces the position advocated by Presidential Candidate, Donald J. Trump, in the Statement on Preventing Muslim Immigration, issued on December 7, 2015.
2. A copy of this resolution shall be forwarded to Donald J. Trump and to the Chairman of the Republican National Committee by the Office of the City Clerk.
