Statue will be located in City-owned Thomas Silk Park, located at the corner of 1st Street and 6th Avenue, 316-3348 First Street (Block 1932.01, Lot 41), at no cost to the City of Newark.

WHEREAS, the City of Newark has a very large and vibrant community of residents from the Dominican Republican, who have contributed greatly to the social, economic, and cultural progress of the City; and
WHEREAS, for several years, numerous organizations representing the Dominican community, most notably the Centro Dominico-Americano of NJ (CENDA) and the Duartian Institute Newark, have worked tirelessly for a statue recognizing the "Founding Father" of the Dominican Republic, Juan Pablo Duarte, to be erected as a tribute to their profound contributions to the City of Newark; and
WHEREAS, after several other locations proved unsuitable, the new city-owned location at Thomas Silk Park, has been deemed an ideal location for the erection of the statue-at no cost to the city-that will provide immense pride amongst the Dominican population and a lasting legacy of their continued prosperity in the City of Newark.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:
1. The Municipal Council does hereby support the erection of the statue of Juan Pablo Duarte, "Founding Father of the Dominican Republican", at the corner of 6th Avenue and First Street, in Thomas Silk Park, Block 1932.01, Lot 41.
2. The proposed triangular area within Thomas Silk Park would be designated as "Plaza Juan Plaza Duarte" and Dominican organizations and community will the cover any financial costs for the construction of the base and unveiling...
