ORDINANCE TO CHANGE THE NAME OF EDISON PLACE BETWEEN MULBERRY STREET AND MCCARTER HIGHWAY TO DON KING WAY.

WHEREAS, on or about 2015, the City of Newark had a ceremonial celebration for Mr. Don King, naming the intersection of Edison Place and Mulberry Street as Don King Plaza; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Don King, is well known throughout the world as a longtime professional boxing promoter and iconic sports personality who promoted the most prominent names in boxing history including Muhammad Ali, Mike Tyson, Larry Holmes, Roy Jones, Jr.; and
WHEREAS, what is less known is his generosity toward Newark's residents and Newark based community groups; and
WHEREAS, for the last 15 years, Mr. King has generously donated thousands of turkeys around the holidays to Newark residents; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Don King may be a native son of Cleveland, Ohio, but he has adopted Newark as his own demonstrating an unwavering commitment to social and economic justice in urban communities like Newark; and
WHEREAS, his personal history of rising from the depths of despair to becoming one of the most powerful men in sports entertainment is unparalleled; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Don King has been honored as a humanitarian and philanthropist for his contributions to the NAACP, UNCF college Fund, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Foundation and the National Hispanic Scholarship Fund, he is certainly deserving of a street to be named in his honor; and
WHEREAS, the Newark Municipal Council would like to commemorate his legacy and his contributions to the City of Newark by renaming a portion of Edison Place to Don King Way.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:
