WHEREAS, Albert "Al" Coutinho, who was born and raised in the City of Newark and a lifelong resident, was the son of the Bernardino and Maria Coutinho, prominent members of the Portuguese-American community and founders of the internationally known and acclaimed Portuguese Day Festival in the East Ward Ironbound; and
WHEREAS, "Al" continued that legacy of service to his community, co-founding the Ironbound Soccer Club and bringing meaningful sporting activities to thousands of young people throughout the East Ward; and
WHEREAS, "Al" served the city of Newark in numerous capacities including the Zoning Board of Adjustment Commissioner, Central Planning Board Commissioner, Commissioner of the Essex County Utilities Authority and as a member of the New Jersey General Assembly representing the 29th Legislative District; and
WHEREAS, Albert Coutinho received numerous awards and accolades for his unwavering commitment to his beloved Ironbound community and his Portuguese roots and is well deserving of having his legacy continue with the naming of the Ironbound "B" Field in his honor.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:
1. The Municipal Council supports the naming of the Ironbound B Field in honor of Albert "Al" Coutinho.
2. This Resolution of Support is ratified to the date of adoption of this authorizing Resolution.
