WHEREAS, New Jersey has one of the largest and most diverse Muslim communities in the United States; and
WHEREAS, recognizing this fact, Governor Phil Murphy, passed a landmark resolution in 2023, declaring January 2023 as Muslim Heritage Month; and
WHEREAS, like other heritage months recognized by the State of New Jersey, Muslim Heritage Month is an opportunity to provide cultural and educational programming for residents to learn about the rich and complex histories, cultures and experiences of their diverse Muslim neighbors; and
WHEREAS, the City of Newark has a very large and diverse Muslim community and for its residents is important they take this opportunity for cultural education and community building and celebrate Muslim culture, promote awareness of Islamic traditions, counter stereotypes and foster a more inclusive New Jersey and City of Newark; and
WHEREAS, Governor Murphy signed a joint resolution (SJR105/AJR194) making January Muslim Heritage Month, calling for statewide observance.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:
1. The Municipal Council proclaims January 2026 Muslim Heritage Month throughout the City of Newark, New Jersey.
2. This Resolution of Support is hereby ratified to the date of adoption of this authorizing Resolution.
3. A copy of the Resolution shall be filed with the Office of the City Clerk.
