WHEREAS, the Island of Cuba and its brothers and sisters have been suffering from a lack of food, medicine, electricity, freedom of speech and much more for over sixty (60) years; and

WHEREAS, the Municipal Council of the City of Newark, New Jersey join with the Island of Cuba in their movement of solidarity to condemn the repressive regime that seeks to silence their call to demand change; and

WHEREAS, peaceful protestors have taken to the streets and cannot be silenced, but have been met with brutal militaristic force for simply demanding basic human rights; and

WHEREAS, the Municipal Council of the City of Newark, New Jersey, are hopeful that the Cuban people will break free from the grip of the pandemic and the decades of economic suffering, hunger and repression.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:

1. The people of the Island of Cuba deserve the right to aspire to the ideals articulated by Franklin Delano Roosevelt in his 1941 State of the Union address where he proposed four (4) fundamental freedoms that people "everywhere in the world" ought to enjoy:

a. Freedom of Speech
b. Freedom of Worship
c. Freedom of Want
d. Freedom from Fear

2. The Municipal Council of the City of Newark, New Jersey agree that we as a people, must do all we can as a society to assure that the Cuban people can aspire to universal values that are so much a part of the American democratic experiment and way of life.
