WHEREAS, by Resolution 7R8-c(S) adopted on August 19, 2021, the Municipal Council approved a ceremonial street designation for "John Newton McCray Lane" located at the intersection of Scheerer and Renner Avenues; and

WHEREAS, the Municipal Council wishes to amend the date of the ceremonial street designation from August 21, 2021 to September 11, 2021; and

WHEREAS, Ordinance 6PSF-f, adopted on May 20, 2015, authorizes the designation of an intersection, etc., for honorary and ceremonial purposes; and

WHEREAS, John Newton McCray was born on January 5, 1938 in Georgetown, South Carolina, and departed this life on April 13, 2021; and

WHEREAS, Mr. McCray graduated from Howard High School and later relocated to New York. He moved to New Jersey with family members and began working at a mattress company in North Newark, then at Gold Corporation, where he met and married Janie Johnson. From this union he created a family of two (2) daughters and two (2) adopted sons; and

WHEREAS, Mr. McCray worked at the Gold Corporation until the mid-1980's and then for Plastic Color Chip, until his retirement in 2000. Mr. McCray enjoyed his retirement by traveling to casinos and bingo bus rides. He also enjoyed singing songs by Sam Cooke, Clyde McPhatter and Mahalia Jackson, western movies and attending Mets ...
