WHEREAS, Ordinance 6PSF-e, adopted on May 20, 2015, authorizes the designation of an intersection, etc., for honorary and ceremonial purposes; and
WHEREAS, Linda Jones, a lifelong Newark resident, began her stellar musical career at the tender age of six (6) performing with her Gospel singing family the Jones Singers; and
WHEREAS, by the age of nineteen (19), she recorded her first hit single "Hypnotize", which reached as high as #4 on the R&B chart and #21 on the Hot 100; and
WHEREAS, her success continued in the ensuing years as she recorded several acclaimed albums and was on the verge of super stardom when she passed unexpectedly as the results of a diabetic coma; and
WHEREAS, the Governing Body is seeking to maintain the legacy of outstanding Newark residents such as Linda Jones for honorary and ceremonial purposes.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:
1. The Municipal Council does hereby authorize the honorary and ceremonial renaming of the intersection of Sherman Avenue and Poinier Street as "Linda Jones Way".
2. The official name of said streets shall remain as Sherman Avenue and Poinier Street in its entirety.
