Whereas, the late Sgt. Jorge M. Oliveira was a member of the United States Armed Forces and while stationed in Afghanistan was killed in the line of duty; and
Whereas, Newark residents along with his family members were very fond of this consummate public servant; and
Whereas, the late Sgt. Jorge M. Oliveira leaves behind a number of family members and a community to commemorate his heroism as well as mourn his loss; and
Whereas, the governing body is seeking to maintain his legacy amongst the many residents of this City by designating signage within the Newark community honoring this fallen soldier, by naming this street Sgt. Jorge M. Oliveira Plaza for ceremonial and honorary purposes.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:
1. The Corner of Niagara Street and Darcy Street is herein designated as "Sgt. Jorge M. Oliveira Plaza" for honorary and ceremonial purposes.
2. The official name of said streets shall remain Niagara Street and Darcy Street in their entirety.
