WHEREAS, Ordinance 6PSF-f, adopted on May 20, 2015, authorizes the designation of an intersection, etc. for honorary and ceremonial purposes; and

WHEREAS, Luso-Americano, the City's oldest Portuguese newspaper, was founded in 1928 by Portuguese businessmen, Dr. J. Lobo, Dr. M. Concei?ao Jr., Manuel Castro and Valentim Rocha; and

WHEREAS, in December 1939, Vasco Jardim, an immigrant from Madeira, revitalized the newspaper and transformed it into the leading publication it is today eighty-five (85) years later; and

WHEREAS, in 1988, the weekly newspaper began publications bi-weekly on Wednesdays and Fridays, with its staff of five (5) full-time journalists, various collaborators and dozens of correspondents reporting on news events relevant to the vibrant Portuguese community; and

WHEREAS, presently, the newspaper is under the leadership of Executive Director, Antonio Matinho, Operational Director, Paul Matinho and News Editor, Henrique Mano.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:

1. The Municipal Council does hereby authorize the honorary and ceremonial renaming of the intersection of Union Street and Hamilton Street as "Luso-Americano Way".
