Additional Information:
WHEREAS, since the 1990's, maternal mortality rates have risen in the United States and the impact of this health crisis majorly affects women of color; and
WHEREAS, as of recent in 2022, the State of New Jersey ranks 47th out of 50 states for safe births; insinuating that New Jersey does not have safe birthing practices; and
WHEREAS, women of color have a more difficult time accessing reproductive health care that meets their needs, due to this, are up to seven (7) times more likely than any other race to die during childbirth in the State of New Jersey; and
WHEREAS, the responsibility falls on the governmental system of New Jersey to ensure safe births for all, no matter the race and or economic status; and
WHEREAS, approximately 4,000 babies are born in the City of Newark every year and we have the responsibility and opportunity to ensure a healthy pregnancy, safe delivery, and support for postpartum care, supportive maternity leave plans; and
WHEREAS, Newark can empower residents to be maternal health advocates by spreading helpful and useful information across the City, and as an answer to this, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention has created the Hear Her Awareness Campaign to empower families to be educated about practices to ensure a healthy and safe pregnancy; and
WHEREAS, the Greater Newark HealthCare Coalition and the Partnership for Maternal and Child Health of Northern New Jersey are collaborating to share maternal health information with Newark residents and keeping them educated and well-informed; and
