WHEREAS, Captain John Scott-Bey, considered the 3rd most decorated officer in the history of the Newark Police Department's, joined the Newark Police Department in 1971 after a short stint in the United States Army, where he obtained the rank of Sergeant and earned numerous commendations and citations including the Distinguished Service Medal; and

WHEREAS, Captain Scott-Bey, began his 34-year career as a patrolman in Newark's West District and quickly rose through the ranks earning a reputation amongst his peers and in the streets as a no-nonsense "Cop cop", willing to go the extra mile to protect and serve the community with valor, dedication, integrity and the highest level of professionalism; and

WHEREAS, throughout his outstanding career Captain John Scott-Bey, facilitated over 20,000 arrests served on numerous interagency task forces, mentored hundreds of new police officers and commanders, and culminated his career as Director of the Newark Police Department.


NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:

1. The Municipal Council does hereby authorize the honorary and ceremonial renaming of the intersection of Shepherd Avenue and Bergen Street as "John Scott-Bey Way".

2. The official name of said streets shall remain as Shepherd Avenue and Bergen Street in its entirety.
