WHEREAS, since its inception 45 years ago, WBGO jazz radio station (88.3), has maintained its musical and cultural dominance in the Newark metro area, committed to delivering quality programming, promoting local arts & culture, and providing an important platform for the community voices; and

WHEREAS, WBGO, unabashedly considered the City of Newark's cultural crown jewel, is a member-supported radio station, fully dependent upon the generous donations of its listeners, funding from philanthropic organizations and limited public dollars secured through a competitive funding process; and

WHEREAS, while many other radio stations and entertainment mediums in the highly competitive Tri-State area have come and gone, WBGO, has continue to operate and maintain the highest of standards, and is recognized throughout the United States as one of the premier jazz radio stations; and

WHEREAS, WBGO is seeking to expand its footprint in Newark's rapidly growing New Jersey Performing Arts Center Arts & Cultural District, with the purchase of space, significantly upgrade equipment and technology, expand programming and increase its 300,000 listener base, with the submission of a New Jersey Cultural and Arts Facilities Expansion (CAFE) Grant.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:
