WHEREAS, Ordinance 6PSF-f, adopted on May 20, 2015, authorizes the designation of an intersection, etc., for honorary and ceremonial purposes; and
WHEREAS, Juan Pablo Duarte (1813-1876) was a Dominican politician and the foremost founding father of the Dominican Republic, leading the movement for independence from Haiti through the secret society La Trinitaria; and
WHEREAS, After the Dominican Republic was founded in 1844, Duarte went into exile, spending the rest of his life in Venezuela and dying there in 1876.; and
WHEREAS, He is remembered as a revolutionary nationalist who fought for liberal ideals and the nation's freedom; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:
1. The Municipal Council does hereby authorize the honorary and ceremonial renaming of the intersection of First Street and Fourth Street as “Juan Pablo Duarte Square”.
2. The official name of said streets shall remain as First Street and Fourth Street in its entirety.

This Resolution authorizes the naming of the intersection of First Street and Fourth Street “Juan Pablo Duarte Square”, for honorary and ceremonial purposes.
