AN ORDINANCE AMENDING TITLE II, ADMINISTRATION, CHAPTER TWO, OFFICE OF THE MAYOR, PART TWO BOARDS, AGENCIES, COMMISSIONS, SECTION 2:2-64 MUNICIPAL COURT OF THE REVISED GENERAL ORDINANCES OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY 2000, BY INCREASING THE NUMBER OF MUNICIPAL JUDGES.

WHEREAS, the Chief Judge of the Municipal Court (the "Chief Judge") desires to change the composition of the Municipal Court of the City of Newark (the "Municipal Court") to better accommodate the demands of both the court and the municipality; and
WHEREAS, the Chief Judge desires to amend Ordinance 2:2-64.5, to increase the number of judges of the Municipal Court; and
WHEREAS, the City of Newark made application to the Assignment Judge, Vicinage V, to the Honorable Shelia Venable, P.J.S.C., to increase the number of regular municipal judges from twelve (12) to fourteen (14) to address the backlog and assist in emergent duty caseload; and
WHEREAS, by Court Order dated and entered on March 5, 2021, the Assignment Judge, Vicinage V, the Honorable Shelia Venable, P.J.S.C., consented to increasing the number of regular municipal judges from twelve (12) to fourteen (14).
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:

Section 1. The Revised General Ordinances of the City of Newark, New Jersey, 2000, shall be amended and supplemented, as follows:
2:2-64. MUNICIPAL COURT.
2:2-64.5. Judges; Number; Appointment; Term; Full Time.
a. The Municipal Court shall have twelve (12) fourteen (14) Judges who shall be appointed by the Mayor with the advice and consent of the Council for the term provided in N.J.S.A. 2A:8-5, of which eleven (11) thirteen (13) shall be full-time and one (1) part-time.
