WHEREAS, the City of Newark has made significant progress in utilizing technology in combating crime; and
WHEREAS, the use of technology by the Newark Police Department includes street cameras, gunshot detection and traffic monitoring systems and license plate readers; and
WHEREAS, the municipal Council of the City of Newark is aware of new technology which will allow law-abiding citizens the power to anonymously report criminal activity to help the police fight crime through their smart-phones; and
WHEREAS, this new technology is being manufactured/developed by several companies; and
WHEREAS, it is the desire of the Municipal Council of the City of Newark that the Newark Police Department investigate the products of the various companies in an effort to bring this new smart-phone crime fighting technology to the City of Newark.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:
1 It does hereby urge the Newark Police Department to investigate the new smart-phone crime fighting technology to determine if it can be an effective tool in combating crime in the City of Newark.
2. It does hereby urge the Police Department to investigate the products of the various vendors in this area to develop a list of potential vendors from which the City of Newark may solicit proposals to provide this new technology to the City Of Newark.
