Whereas, on Saturday, July 13, 2013, a jury made up of six women found George Zimmerman not guilty of both second degree murder charges and acquitted George Zimmerman for the shooting death of Trayvon Martin an unarmed teenager; and
Whereas, the United States Department of Justice has closely monitored the State of Florida's prosecution of the case against George Zimmerman in the Trayvon Martin murder since it began; and
Whereas, the most fundamental of civil rights - the right to life - was violated the night George Zimmerman stalked and then took the life of Trayvon Martin.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT IT DOES HEREBY URGE:
- The United States Department of Justice review its investigation into the tragic death of Trayvon Martin and file charges against George Zimmerman for civil rights violations in the murder of Trayvon Martin.
- The City Clerk forward a certified copy of this resolution to Attorney General Eric Holder for his immediate consideration and action for this egregious violation.
