Whereas, the United States Military's involvement in the Vietnam War lasted from 1965 through 1973, during which time more than 58,000 of our nation's service members lost their lives and more than 300,000 were wounded; and
Whereas, due in part to the extremely controversial nature of the Vietnam War, those who survived their tour of duty did not receive the proper gratitude and acknowledgement of their service and sacrifice upon returning home; and
Whereas, in the decades since, the United States has worked hard to correct this mistake and give our courageous Vietnam Veterans the recognition they so deeply deserve; and
Whereas, the establishment of "Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day" in New Jersey is an important advancement in this campaign and will stand as a fitting tribute to the brave members of the United States Armed Forces who served in South Vietnam and throughout Southeast Asia; and
Whereas, the Municipal Council of the City of Newark, New Jersey, are honored to salute all Vietnam Veterans who reside in New Jersey for their dedication to preserving our freedom and defending our way of life.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE NEWARK MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT IT DOES HEREBY DECLARE March 30, 2014 as "Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day" in the City of Newark, New Jersey.
