body

Whereas, on January 29, 2014, the City of Newark enacted an ordinance "to promote the overall health and safety of the residents and workers in the city of Newark by reducing the risk of and spread of communicable disease and contagion by requiring a policy of paid sick leave for workers';

Whereas, the ordinance guarantees to most employees in Newark the right to take paid sick leave when they or their family members are sick;

Whereas, the effective date of the ordinance is May 29, 2014;

Whereas, the ordinance will be effective at promoting the overall health and safety of City residents only if employers and employees are aware of the ordinance and comply with it;

Whereas, a well-designed and executed strategy for implementation by the City will help inform residents of their rights and responsibilities under the ordinance and will help ensure that the ordinance is successful;

Now, therefore, be it resolved, by the Municipal Council of the City of Newark, that:

The City of Newark shall expeditiously develop and execute a plan for implementing the paid sick leave ordinance and for educating the employers and workers of Newark as to their rights and responsibilities. The City shall, as soon as possible:

1. Post clear and helpful information about the ordinance online, including answers to frequently asked questions;

2. Make available for download from the internet notices and posters (in English, Spanish, and Creole) that can be used by employers in order to comply...
