WHEREAS, the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety (DHTS) solicits applications for highway safety grant projects designed to combat the number and severity of traffic crashes by developing and supporting educational and enforcement programs; and
WHEREAS, the DHTS Grant program entitled "Pedestrian Safety Program" aims to reduce crashes involving pedestrians through education and enforcement; and
WHEREAS, the City of Newark is committed to ensuring the safety of its citizens and ensuring the safe movement of pedestrian traffic on its City streets; and
WHEREAS, on April 30, 2014, on behalf of the City of Newark, the Police Director submitted an application to the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety (DHTS) requesting grant funding in the amount of $16,000.00 from the Pedestrian Safety Program to be used to fund police overtime initiatives to address motor vehicle violations in pedestrian crash prone locations in the wards of the City with no City funds required; and
