AN ORDINANCE SUPPLEMENTING TITLE II, ADMINISTRATION, CHAPTER 2, OFFICE OF THE MAYOR AND AGENCIES, SECTION 66, OF THE REVISED GENERAL ORDINANCES OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, 2000, TO ESTABLISH THE CARIBBEAN COMMISSION IN THE OFFICE OF THE MAYOR.

WHEREAS, the City of Newark has a deep history, a shared culture and extensive relations with the Caribbean region as well as Caribbean Americans throughout the United States.
WHEREAS, the City of Newark as a result of the deep history, shared culture and extensive relations, aspires to create a Caribbean Commission as part of City Government, to promote an understanding of Caribbean and Caribbean American policy issues and to promote awareness and recognition of Caribbean and Caribbean American culture and civilization.
WHEREAS, such a Commission organized under the auspices of the Mayor's Office, will be directed to implement its duties, which shall include policy development, community resource development, institution building and support, promotion of artistic and cultural endeavors and the conducting of charitable activities and humanitarian assistance.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY THAT:
Title 2. Administration, Chapter 2, Office of the Mayor and Agencies, is hereby amended to add a new section 66.6; the Caribbean Commission is hereby adopted to read as follows:
2:2-66.6. Commission Established
There is hereby established within the office of the Mayor, the Newark Caribbean Commission.
2:2-66.7. Membership and Appointments
The Commission shall consist of up to twenty-one (21) members to be appointed by the Mayor with the advice and consent of the Municipal Council. Each member shall be appointed for a term of four (4) years and shall serve until his/her successor is duly appointed.
