Purpose: Opposing the Closure of St. Michael's Medical Center and Supporting St. Michael's Asset Purchasing Agreement with Prime Healthcare

Whereas, St. Michael's Medical Center provides exceptional health care to the residents of the City of Newark, the surrounding municipalities and the County of Essex; and
Whereas, St. Michael's Medical Center receives 9,000 annual admissions, over 36,000 Emergency Department visits annually and employs nearly 1,400 staff members, 300 of whom are Newark residents and 700 of whom reside in Essex County; and
Whereas, St. Michael's Medical Center and the community-at-large are concerned that the State of New Jersey Department of Health may cause the closure of St. Michael's Medical Center in order to facilitate and ensure the growth and success of the Rutgers's New Jersey Medical School; and
Whereas, St Michael's Medical Center has entered into an Asset Purchase agreement with Prime Healthcare, which has committed to build upon St. Michael's mission of providing exceptional acute and emergency care to its patients, the residents of the City of Newark, the surrounding municipalities and the County of Essex.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:
1. It opposes the closure of St. Michael's Medical Center and any changes to its current form of operation.
2. It supports the St. Michael's Asset Purchase Agreement with Prime Healthcare and urges the Commissioner of Health to approve Prime's Certificate of Need (CON) so that the acquisition of St. Michael's Medical Center is finalized and the hospital continues providing exceptional health care.
