WHEREAS, the public policy of New Jersey states that government records shall be readily accessible for inspection, copying or examination, with certain exceptions for the protection of the public interest and all government records shall be subject to public access unless exempt from such access as permissible by P.L. 1963, c. 73; and

WHEREAS, a public agency has a responsibility and obligation to safeguard from public access a person's personal information with which it has been entrusted when disclosure therefore would violate the person's reasonable expectation of privacy; and

WHEREAS, S-782, sponsored by Senators Loretta Weinberg and Joseph Pennacchio, would make certain access changes to the Open Public Records Act; establish a State public finance website and creates a program for the development of searchable local finance websites.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:

1. It supports S-782 and urges our State Legislators to pass this meaningful legislation.

2. That certified copies of this resolution be forwarded to Senators Loretta Weinberg and Joseph Pennacchio, the Senate President and the Essex County Delegation.
