WHEREAS, Assemblywomen L. Grace Spencer, Cleopatra G. Tucker, and Eliana Pintor Marin, among other legislators, have sponsored Assembly Bill 3583, which would appropriate $20 million from the societal benefits charge (commonly referred to as the “Clean Energy Fund”), collected pursuant to N.J.S.A. 48:3-60, to provide funding to the City of Newark, to make water supply infrastructure improvements to address elevated levels of lead found in drinking water in the City of Newark; and

 

WHEREAS, the publicly disclosed drinking water infrastructure problem in the State Controlled Schools in Newark, is a significant public health problem; and

 

WHEREAS, the proposed legislation would be beneficial to all residents, especially children in the school system, both public and charter schools and at home where they may also be exposed to lead; and

 

WHEREAS, the Municipal Council of the City of Newark urges the Essex County Delegation and all other state legislators to support and vote in favor of this legislation.

 

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY AS FOLLOWS:

 

1.                     The Newark Municipal Council indicates their support of and urges that the State Legislature vote favorably to adopt Assembly Bill 3583, sponsored by Assemblywomen L. Grace Spencer, Cleopatra G. Tucker, and Eliana Pintor Marin, among other legislators.

 

2.                     A copy of the adopted resolution shall be forwarded by the Office of the City Clerk to the State Essex County Delegation, Senate President, Stephen M. Sweeney and Assembly Speaker, Vincent Prieto of the New Jersey State Legislature.
