WHEREAS, on April 16, 2016 a powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck the nation of Ecuador; and

WHEREAS, this powerful earthquake was Ecuador's strongest earthquake in decades; and

WHEREAS, Spain's Red Cross said as many as 5,000 people might need temporary housing because of destroyed homes and 100,000 need some sort of aid; and

WHEREAS, while touring a City ravaged by the earthquake that killed more than four hundred (400) people, Ecuadorean President, Rafael Correa contemplated a rebuilding costing billions of dollars and a potentially "huge" impact on the fragile OPEC economy; and

WHEREAS, Newark Municipal Council wishes to express to the people of Ecuador the support of the City of Newark, New Jersey (the "City") and its residents.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:

1. The City of Newark does hereby make known its support for the people of Ecuador in this critical time.

2. The Municipal Council sends the condolences of the residents of the City to the families who lost loved ones during this terrible tragedy.

3. A certified copy of this resolution shall be forwarded to the United States Diplomatic Mission in Ecuador, the Ecuadorean Diplomatic Mission in the United States and the United Nations by the Office of the City Clerk.
