WHEREAS, the amount to be raised by local property taxes in 2016-2017 school year by the State-Controlled, Newark Board of Education is higher than the previous school year; and

WHEREAS, this increase will cause higher tax bills for Newark residents and businesses in 2016 and 2017 with a school portion of the property tax bill to be increased; and

WHEREAS, the State-Controlled, Newark Board of Education budget will force Newark residents and businesses to pay for the poor decisions of state officials; and

WHEREAS, the Municipal Council urges the Administration to ensure that any proceeds from the sale of Newark Public School buildings, sold through the Newark Housing Authority in 2016 and 2017 are used to offset the increase in the tax levy for the State-Controlled Newark Board of Education.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:

1. The Municipal Council urges the Administration of the City of Newark to ensure that the proceeds from any Newark Public School building sold through the Newark Housing Authority in 2016 and 2017 be used to offset the increase in the tax levy from the State-Controlled Newark Board of Education.
