WHEREAS, Ordinance 6PSF-E, adopted on May 20, 2015, authorizes the designation of an intersection, etc. for honorary and ceremonial purposes; and

WHEREAS, Elsie Eatman was a native of Newark, who attended Essex County Vocational School, Essex County College and Rutgers University. She worked at Martland Medical Hospital before changing careers and becoming a Housing Manager for the Newark Housing Authority. Ms. Eatman was also a community activist and power player in the City of Newark and was a member on the Board of the Newark Tenants Council, President of the Pennington Court Tenants Association, a Board Member of the Newark Teachers Union and one of the founding Members of the Down Neck Civic Association; and

WHEREAS, the Newark Municipal Council would like to commemorate her sterling achievements by renaming the intersection of Pennington Street and Pacific Street in her honor.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:

1. The Municipal Council does hereby authorize the renaming of the corner of Pennington Street and Pacific Street as Elsie Eatman Plaza for honorary and ceremonial purposes.

2. The names of said streets shall remain Pennington Street and Pacific Street in their entirety.
