WHEREAS, Ordinance 6PSF-E, adopted on May 20, 2015, authorizes the designation of an intersection, etc. for honorary and ceremonial purposes; and

 

                     WHEREAS, Ms. Sylvia Jackson, a longtime Newark community advocate, President and Co-founder of the University Heights Community Council, was instrumental in the creation of Newark’s University Heights Science and Technology Park and the driving force behind its phenomenal success; and

 

WHEREAS, since its inception, the Park has expanded into 421,000 square feet of office, research and incubator space, a day care center, home to over 90 incubating technology and service based companies, the largest in the State of New Jersey, has created over 400 permanent jobs and home to Science Park High School, one of New Jersey’s premier public high schools and several global bio-tech firms.   

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:

                     

1.                     The Municipal Council does hereby authorize the honorary and ceremonial renaming of the intersection of Wilsey Street and Warren Street to New Street, Sylvia Jackson Way.

 

2.                     The name of the said street shall remain Wilsey Street in its entirety.

 

 

STATEMENT

 

This resolution hereby authorizes the naming of the intersection of Wilsey Street and Warren Street to New Street as Sylvia Jackson Way, for honorary and ceremonial purposes.
