WHEREAS, Ordinance 6PSF-E, adopted on May 20, 2015, authorizes the designation of an intersection, etc. for honorary and ceremonial purposes; and
WHEREAS, Erika Whitfield, who was born at Newark Beth Israel Hospital in Newark, New Jersey was a single parent whose children attended Oliver Street School where she was also employed, since 2009, as a dedicated and committed School Crossing Guard at the busy and dangerous intersection of Oliver Street and McCarter Highway; and
WHEREAS, her outstanding service and concern for the safety of the children and all pedestrians, went over and beyond her appointed duties and she became a trusted fixture in the community and was dearly loved and cherished by the Ironbound community and the students of Oliver Street School.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:
1. The Municipal Council does hereby authorize the honorary and ceremonial renaming of the intersection of Oliver Street and McCarter Highway as Erika Whitfield Plaza.
2. The names of the said streets shall remain Oliver Street and McCarter Highway in its entirety.

This resolution hereby authorizes the naming of the intersection of Oliver Street and McCarter Highway as Erika Whitfield Plaza, for honorary and ceremonial purposes.
