                      WHEREAS, The Hartford Financial Services Group, Inc. (hereinafter “The Hartford”) created a Home Fire Index (hereinafter “Index”) that ranks cities with the highest home fire risk based upon information from the National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS). The City of Newark ranks 24th on The Hartford’s Index, placing Newark among cities with the highest home fire risk; and 

 

WHEREAS, The Hartford created the Junior Fire Marshal (JFM) program to teach children the basics of fire prevention and safety. To accomplish its goals, the JFM offers grants to cities with the highest risk of home fires in an effort to help those cities reduce the risk of home fires through education and fire safety measures. The JFM has offered the City of Newark, Department of Public Safety, Division of Fire (hereinafter “Newark Fire Division”) a grant in the amount of $10,000.00 to support ongoing fire safety education; and     

 

WHEREAS, the City of Newark has a need to reduce home fires and will use the Hartford grant funds to improve fire safety education in the City of Newark; and 

 

WHEREAS, on June 16, 2017, The Hartford offered the Newark Fire Division a grant in the amount of $10,000.00; and 

 

WHEREAS, the Newark Fire Division seeks to accept these grant funds and use them for fire safety measures; and

 

 

WHEREAS, this resolution authorizes the Newark Fire Division to accept this grant pursuant to N.J.S.A. 40A:5-29 which stipulates that any local unit is authorized and empowered to accept bequest, legacies and gifts made to and is empowered to utilize such bequest, legacies and gifts in the manner set forth in the conditions of the bequest, legacy and gift shall not be put to any use which is inconsistent with the laws of this State and the United States.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:

 

1.                     The Mayor and/or his designee, the Public Safety Director is hereby authorized pursuant to N.J.S.A. 40A:5-29 to accept from The Hartford Financial Services Group, Inc., One Hartford Plaza T-16, Hartford Connecticut 06155, a total amount of $10,000.00 in cash/check/direct deposit, for the purpose of supporting ongoing fire safety education in the City of Newark.

 

2.                     No municipal funds shall be expended to accept this grant/donation.

 

3.                     There is no contract/agreement required to be signed, but a copy of any documents required to be executed for the acceptance of this grant/donation will be filed in the Office of the City Clerk by the Director of Public Safety.  

 

STATEMENT

 

This resolution ratifies and authorizes the Mayor and/or his designee the Director of Public Safety, to accept a grant/donation from The Hartford Financial Services Group, Inc. in the form of $10,000.00 in cash/check/direct deposit to support the Fire Division in ongoing fire safety education.
