WHEREAS, Ordinance 6PSF-e, adopted on May 20, 2015, authorizes the designation of an intersection, etc. for honorary and ceremonial purposes; and

WHEREAS, the late George "Buddy Gee" Branch, who was elected to the Newark City Council in 1982, holds the unique distinction of representing the Central Ward for 16 years, the longest tenure of any Central Ward council member in the history of the city; and

WHEREAS, "Buddy Gee", as he was affectionately known, was a tireless champion for seniors and children, was a former professional boxer and coach who co-founded Newark's Project Pride, one of the city's pre-eminent sports program that provides scholarships and academic enrichment for Newark youths; and

WHEREAS, George "Buddy Gee" Branch, was well respected throughout the City of Newark for his sincere commitment and dedication to the housing needs of his Newark residents through his many years of employment with the Newark Housing Authority.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:

1. The Municipal Council does hereby authorize the honorary and ceremonial renaming of the intersection of Spruce Street and Irvine turner Boulevard as George "Buddy Gee" Branch Way.

2. The official name of the said streets shall remain Spruce Street and Irvine Turner Boulevard in its entirety.
