WHEREAS, Ordinance 6PSF-e, adopted on May 20, 2015, authorizes the designation of an intersection, etc. for honorary and ceremonial purposes; and

 

WHEREAS, long time Newark resident, Rodney Gilbert, known as “Newark’s Impresario of Art and Culture, its’ Guardian of Creativity for Murals and Theater”, served as the head of the Newark Public Schools Theater Program and  is responsible for half of the City’s fifty (50) murals through the Newark Mural Arts Project, a City-sponsored program he managed; and

 

WHEREAS, Rodney Gilbert was a noted actor, theater and film director, made art accessible to Newark residents and surrounding urban communities through his Newark-based theater and consulting company, Yendor Productions, which he served as founder and chief executive officer; and  

 

WHEREAS, Rodney Gilbert was beloved throughout Newark for his sincere honesty, integrity, and unwavering commitment and dedication to the residents of the City of Newark.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:

                     

1.                     The Municipal Council does hereby authorize the honorary and ceremonial renaming of the intersection of Spruce Street and Washington Avenue as Rodney Gilbert Way.

 

2.                     The official name of the said streets shall remain Spruce Street and Washington Street in its entirety.

 

 

STATEMENT

 

This resolution hereby authorizes the naming of the intersection of Spruce Street and Washington Street as Rodney Gilbert Way, for honorary and ceremonial purposes.
