WHEREAS, Ordinance 6PSF-e, adopted on May 20, 2015, authorizes the designation of an intersection, etc. for honorary and ceremonial purposes; and

 

WHEREAS, Mr. Joseph A. Bernal was born in Rio Piedra, Puerto Rico and came to the City of Newark at the age of twenty-one (21), where he earned his Bachelor Degree in Criminal Justice at Kean University. Upon graduation, he began his law enforcement career in the Essex County Sheriff’s Office before joining the Newark Police Department in 1999; and 

 

WHEREAS, Officer Bernal worked varies assignments throughout the Newark Police Department including the Fugitive Task Force, the Safe City Task Force, and ultimately as the Community Outreach Detective for the Citizen/Clergy Unit. He was widely beloved in the community for his altruism and selfless desire to improve the community he served; and 

 

WHEREAS, Officer Bernal always volunteered his services during the holiday seasons providing meals, toys or encouragement to at-risk youths and especially those in need, and continued to be an outstanding role model, community servant, friend, confidante, mentor and activist up to his passing on December 21, 2018.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:

                     

1.                     The Municipal Council does hereby authorize the honorary and ceremonial renaming of the intersection of Summer Avenue and Taylor Street as Joseph A. Bernal Boulevard.

 

2.                     The official names of the said streets shall remain Summer Avenue and Taylor Street in their entirety.

This resolution hereby authorizes the naming of the intersection of Summer Avenue and Taylor Street “Joseph A. Bernal Boulevard” for honorary and ceremonial purposes
