WHEREAS, Julio Alfredo Jaramillo Laurido, one of latin america’s greatest recording artist, was born on October 1, 1935, in Guayaquil, Ecuador, recorded over 4,000 songs throughout his career, including his most famous song, well known throughout South America “Nuestro Juramento”; and
WHEREAS, Julio Jaramillo, as he was known, performed various renditions of botero, valses, pasillos, tangos and rancheras and performed throughout South and Central America, Canada and the United States and in 1996 a stamp was issued in his honor by his native Ecuador popularity. His immense popularity is compared favorably to Frank Sinatra; and his collaborations with numerous noteworthy singers from throughout South American countries including Colombia, Peru, Argentina and Puerto Rico endeared his legacy after his death in 1978.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:
1. The Municipal Council does hereby authorize the honorary and ceremonial renaming of the intersection of Union Street and Market Street “Julio Jaramillo Way”.
2. The official name of the said streets shall remain Union Street and Market Street in their entirety.
