WHEREAS, Ordinance 6PSF-e, adopted on May 20, 2015, authorizes the designation of an intersection, etc. for honorary and ceremonial purposes; and

WHEREAS, Rev. Toney E. Jackson, Sr., was born and raised in the town of Edgefield, South Carolina, the third of eight (8) children. He attended and graduated from Morehouse College in 1970, and received his M.A. degree from Montclair State College in 1972, before beginning his teaching career at East Orange High School in New Jersey; and

WHEREAS, Reverend Jackson, who also received his religious training at Northeastern Bible College, New York School of Bible and Manhattan Bible Institute, and was ordained by the New Hope Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Leonidas B. Young and served eight (8) years as an Assistant Pastor until receiving the call to serve as Pastor of Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church in Newark, New Jersey; and

WHEREAS, during the ensuing years until his passing Reverend Jackson continued his outstanding mission of teaching and preaching and bringing people closer to their faith and closer to God.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:

1. The Municipal Council does hereby authorize the honorary and ceremonial renaming of the intersection of 4th Street and 1st Avenue "Reverend Toney E. Jackson, Sr. Way".
