Additional Information: 

Designating Mulberry Street as Byrne Boulevard, Center Street as Hannaford Boulevard; and, Central Avenue as Coyne Boulevard, and the intersection of Washington Street and Central Avenue as Saint Patrick’s Square for Irish Heritage Week.

The Saint Patrick’s Day Parade will begin at 1:00 P.M. at Lafayette and Mulberry Streets and end at Central Avenue and Washington Street.

WHEREAS, Irish-Americans from organizations located primarily in Essex, Hudson, and Union counties came together in 1936 to form the St. Patrick's Day Parade Committee, Inc., sponsor of New Jersey's first and finest Saint Patrick's Day Parade; and

 

WHEREAS, the 2020 Saint Patrick's Day Parade will be led by Grand Marshal Michael D. Byrne, past General Chairman of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee, Inc. while the Deputy Grand Marshal will be Eileen McGinley Hannaford, and President/Executive Chairman of the Kevin J. Hannaford, Sr. Foundation, Inc.; and

 

WHEREAS, the 2020 Saint Patrick's Day Parade will be dedicated to the late Francis J.  “Frank” Coyne, who distinguished himself as a strong supporter of the Saint Patrick's Day Parade for many years; and

 

WHEREAS, under the leadership of the Grand Marshal and the Deputy Grand Marshal, as well as General Chairman  John M. “Jack” Doll, the St. Patrick's Day Parade Committee is also the sponsor of Irish Heritage Week in Newark featuring a week-long promotion for restaurants, Art and Essay Contests for students of the Archdiocese of Newark, an Annual Student History Breakfast, the seventh Annual Saint Patrick's Day High School Band Competition for high school bands from across New Jersey; and a charitable giving program for worthy institutions such as St. John's Soup Kitchen, St. Benedict's Prep and Saint Vincent Academy; and

 

WHEREAS, the Newark Municipal Council wishes to publicly recognize the St. Patrick's Day Parade Committee, Inc. and their plans for a week of spiritual, educational, cultural, charitable, and economic activities that will enrich the fabric of the City.

 

                     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:

 

1.                     The Municipal Council does hereby support the 85th Year of the Newark Saint Patrick’s Day Parade, to be held on Friday, March 13, 2020 at 1:00 P.M., beginning at Lafayette Street and Mulberry Street and ending at Central Avenue and Washington Street in recognition of the many contributions that Irish-Americans have made and continue to make to the City of Newark and declares the week of March 6, 2020 through March 13, 2020, as Irish Heritage Week.

 

2.                     The Municipal Council designates Mulberry Street as Byrne  Boulevard, Center Street as Hannaford Boulevard, Central Avenue as Coyne Boulevard, and the intersection of Washington Street and Central Avenue as Saint Patrick’s Square for the duration of Friday, March 13, 2020 Saint Patrick’s Day  Parade.

 

3.                     Copies of this resolution shall be presented by the Municipal Council to the Grand Marshal Michael D. Byrne, Deputy Grand Marshal Eileen McGinley Hannaford, The Coyne Family and General Chairman John M. “Jack” Doll.
