WHEREAS, Ordinance 6PDF-e, adopted on May 20, 2015, authorizes the designation of an intersection, etc. for honorary and ceremonial purposes; and
WHEREAS, Peter Jimenez Pozo, was the founder and proprietor of Jimenez Tobacco, one of Newark's most iconic family-run cigar and cocktail lounges, which catered to an eclectic mix of white-collar, blue-collar, men, women, judges, congressmen, politicians, teachers, businessmen and women, construction workers and regular neighborhood folks, as well as out-of-towners and visitors, in a relaxed and warm environment; and
WHEREAS, his benign sarcasm, wit, humor, philanthropy and sincere love for people and the City of Newark in the 20th Century Hemingway inspired pre-Castro Cuba atmosphere and d?cor lounge, touched individuals and created a bond that was unwavering, and provided patrons the opportunity to breakdown social, economic and racial barriers through meaningful conversations and engaging dialogue.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:
1. The Municipal Council hereby authorizes the honorary and ceremonial renaming of the intersection of Lafayette Street and Liberty Street as "Peter Jimenez Pozo Way".
2. The official name of the said streets shall remain Lafayette Street and Liberty Street in their entirety.
