WHEREAS, Ordinance 6PDF-e, adopted on May 20, 2015, authorizes the designation of an intersection, etc. for honorary and ceremonial purposes; and

 

WHEREAS, in 1980, La Hermosa Church was founded by Reverend Sonnia Rose Ramos and her late husband Reverend Manuel Ramos, the founder and owner of the world-renowned and critically acclaimed Iberia and Peninsula Restaurants in Newark’s Ironbound community became one of the most influential businessmen and philanthropists in the City of Newark over the past thirty (30) years; and  

 

WHEREAS, through their vision and hard work, Iberia Peninsula Restaurants became the anchor of Newark’s dining experience and its worldwide reputation as a tourist destination for those seeking authentic Portuguese and Iberian cuisine and culture; and

 

WHEREAS, their continuing contributions to the social, civic and cultural advancement of the Portuguese community contributed greatly to the revitalization of the East Ward community and spearheaded its emergence as one of the most desirable urban communities in the northeast to live and play. 

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:

                     

1.                     The Municipal Council hereby authorizes the honorary and ceremonial renaming of the intersection of Broad Street and Thomas Street as “Reverend Sonnia Rose Ramos Way”.

 

2.                     The official name of the said streets shall remain Broad Street and Thomas Street in their entirety.

This resolution authorizes the renaming of the intersection of Broad Street and Thomas Street as “Reverend Sonnia Rose Ramos Way”, for honorary and ceremonial purposes.
